Thousand Years of Existence of the Tabo Chos-Khor
by O.C. Handa
Foreword by H.H. The Dalai Lama
This book is a comprehensive study of the rise and development of Buddhism in a broader spatio-temporal context of the western Trans-Himalayan region since its nascent days in India. The later efflorescence of Buddhism in the Tibetan world and the emergence of Buddhist kingdom of Guge in the western Tibet has been discussed in the context of the contemporary Trans-Himalayan polity. It is for the first time that the pristine grandeur and intellectual glory of the oldest living Buddhist establishment in the Trans-Himalaya – the Tabo chos-khor – has been rediscovered in the present study by Dr. O.C. Handa, who has already earned a distinction in the Buddhist study of this region.
Founded in 996 A.D. by the Great Lotsaba Rin-chen-bZang-po and his patron King Ye-shes-O of Guge, this great monastery shall be completing one thousand years of its existence in 1996. And, this book incidently commemorates that historic event also.
